Jackson suffers World Cup defeat
Printable version Email to a friend Share this story Add your comment Contact us
Ashley Jackson’s hopes of winning the Hockey World Cup are over after England lost their semi-final with Germany this afternoon.

The match was a repeat of last summer's European Championship final, when Jackson, who played junior hockey at Tunbridge Wells, scored twice as England won 5-3. Neither the 22-year-old, born in Chatham, or the rest of the team could pull off a repeat performance as Germany ran out 4-1 winners in New Delhi, India.

Despite the defeat it remains England’s best showing at a World Cup on foreign soil. Their only previous semi-final appearance came as hosts in 1986.

England still have the chance to win a bronze medal, when they play the Netherlands on Saturday. Jackson could still finish as the tournament’s top scorer, but he would need a hat-trick against the Dutch to get into contention.

The third/fourth play-off starts at 10.05am (GMT) on Saturday.
