Crescent Road on Tuesday
KENT NEWS: Police including masked, firearms officers continue to surround a property in central Tunbridge Wells.

Police negotiators have been talking to a man, who has barricaded himself in his own flat above an antiques shop in Crescent Road.

The area was said to be swarming with emergency services including dogs units, a armed police, an unmarked BMW X5 and two fire engines.

"We do not believe the man has access to firearms," said Chief Inspector Martin Wilson, Tunbridge Wells district commander.

"However we do have intelligence that leads us to believe that he is a serious risk to himself and to police officers. Kent Police is working with partner agencies to ensure a safe resolution to this incident."

During the afternoon, the man's family arrived and were taken to the town's police station.

Police were first called to the scene at around 11.30pm on Monday after a member of the public reported a disturbance, the road was closed and overnight a number of residents were moved out of nearby homes.

Furniture was strewn across the street during the incident and the man was threatening to harm other people.

There is limited access to Crescent Road including the multi-storey car park and businesses in the area.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the immediate area due to traffic disruption in the town centre.
